Dennis Thompson, AIA, and Susette Naylor, AIA, have practiced architecture together in Santa Barbara since 1985. They believe in “socially and environmentally responsible design and planning” with the goal of translating the dreams and desires of their clients into projects which are practical, beautiful and environmentally sound. Thompson Naylor Architects is proud to be part of the green building movement. They are strongly committed to increasing green building awareness in the community as well as their own expertise within the field. The principals as well as several staff members are LEED Accredited Professionals and are also certified as Green Building Professionals by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), San Francisco Bay Area Chapter.
For each project they undertake, Thompson Naylor searches for a unique aesthetic and an environmentally sound design solution. They begin with close observation of the project site and then listen closely to their clients with regard to functional needs and individual preferences. The firm strongly believes in a collaborative design process and values the wisdom of its builder and consultant colleagues. The firm’s work has included dozens of affordable housing units for families, seniors and the disabled. Thompson Naylor has also designed facilities for many non-profit institutions, including schools, religious groups, youth and senior centers, hospitals and spiritual retreats. Designs for single family homes (both new construction and remodel projects) comprise over half of the firm’s work.
Thompson-Naylor has been honored with numerous design and green building awards, including two of their projects having been certified as LEED Platinum. Environmentally sensitive design features that are often incorporated into Thompson Naylor projects include passive and active solar heating, sun tempering, shading, day lighting, natural ventilation, earth-aided cooling, gray water distribution, rainwater collection and the use of non-toxic and alternative green building materials, including two of their projects having been certified as LEED Platinum and one as LEED Gold. Deeply committed to the principles of sustainable design, Thompson Naylor Architects always welcomes the opportunity to pursue these and other options with new clients.
