Joe Campanelli founded Campanelli Construction in 1974, but his interest in the green and sustainable building dates back to the 1960s (or even further if you take into account the influence of his Italian grandparents and their “Waste Not, Want Not” philosophy!)  During college, Joe was an exchange student at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. His Third World experiences led to his appreciation of how other cultures build by making the best use of the materials at hand. Upon returning to the United States, Joe was ready to try “living light on the land.” He leased a 100-acre parcel near the San Marcos Pass and set about to build a cabin completely out of salvage materials.  With no access to utility service, Joe made do with propane and lamp oil for heating and lighting and a well and septic tank for water and sanitation.

Campanelli Construction has grown into a sizable company, performing commercial and residential construction and remodeling, from small jobs to multi-million dollar projects. The company provides construction management and design-build services to many of its clients and always encourages the use of green and sustainable building techniques. Here are a few Campanelli projects that involved some form of green building:

  • Grey Writer Horse Ranch, Santa Ynez: Adobe residence with sod grass roof and recycled eucalyptus logs
  • Sutton Residence, San Marcos Trout Club: New residence with gray water and co-generation solar electric
  • Sichi Residence, San Marcos Trout Club: New residence with gray water system
  • Log Cabin, Ketchum, Idaho
  • Campanelli Construction Offices, Santa Barbara: Structural insulated wall panel design.
